Its For the Kids…

Posted: September 28, 2013 by Fireplace Village in Uncategorized

When I set out to open Village Comics I had one very important mission in mind. Village Comics had to be about supporting the community and more specifically the kids in the community and surrounding areas. It can be easy to be caught up in the business side if things. Profit and loss, valuations, cash flow etc… and it can be easy to lose sight of what’s truly important around you. It has been my goal to make sure we here at Village Comics take time to do what we can to give back. On October 12th we have the Blue Ear Charity Eventand on October 25th we will be at the Promise to Nicholas Not So Scary Halloween Party handing out free comics to all the kids who come by. I’m not writing this for an “atta boy”, I’m writing this in hopes that you, our Villagers will help us and be part of these events and supporting these great causes. They say it takes a Village, and that means we can’t do it on our own. We need you to be part of the collective “we” in the “we will give back”. Whether it’s buying a Blue Ear print, or just coming to an event, it all makes a difference. This is who we are as a Village. This is what it means to be a Villager. -K

peterpanzerfaustHello Villagers. This weeks WYSBR is Peter Panzerfaust by Image.  This is an amazing retelling of the classic Peter Pan story but set to the backdrop of WWII.  I just got through the volume one trade and I was immediately hooked. Image has done it again.  It has lured me into yet another world (see Revival) in which, though cape free, we see people doing some truly amazing and super things.  Panzerfaust has it all, great artwork, superb writing and a story that flows and keeps you wanting for more.  The story begins with Peter helping to rescue a group of orphans whose home has been destroyed by heavy shelling,  and together they travel to France while trying to avoid the Germans, rescuing British soldiers and trying to make sense of the war torn landscape.  For anyone who enjoys the Peter Pan mythos will love Peter Panzerfaust.  Not a Peter Pan fan, (me either) you will still love this book on its own.  I would suggest picking up Peter Panzerfaust here at Village Comics in Bedford, NH. The volume one trade is ready to go.

It’s Not the Value, it’s What it Represents

Recently we had the unique opportunity to bring in a Giant Sized X-Men #1. The book is not perfect. It’s worn around the edges and has seen its time out in the world but its STILL a Giant Sized X-Men #1! This is a book that is hard to come by and not every store has a chance to have it on display. And yet here we are a month into the existence and here it sits. The book itself represents a milestone or is a symbol of what we have been able to accomplish in the short time we have been open. We have a great storefront in Bedford. We offer a quiet and peaceful, laid back atmosphere that is welcoming and open to everyone. And now we have some cool books to have on display and remind us that we are on the right track. We hope you come on in and enjoy it with us. After all. This is yourlocal comic book shop. s.

In this day and age of absolute digital overload its nice to still enjoy a media that is unplugged. No data plans, no logging in via Facebook or retweets. Just good old fashioned reading. Flipping pages, seeing colors in the sunlight and not against the backlight of LEDs. Holding and sharing copies of books you love to read and want others to experience. Imagination engaged not forced. Ownership in your room not a cloud. Purchasing based on content not the number of stars. Comics can be an escape from the “i” age…a path to a time where touch is about actually feeling something at your fingertips not the sterile flatness of constant glass under your thumbs. The comic book shop lends to conversation, recommendation, meditation. No passwords required, logins or emails needed. The 21st century still offers life without a cord, we are the purveyors of that life. Visit us. Join us. Become a Villager.
