CryptozoicMan2Are you a fan of Comic Book Men on AMC? Me too!  Were you excited about the release of Cryptozoic Man because it was created by some of the guys from Comic Book Men?  Me Too! (Wow, we have a lot in common) Don’t you just LOVE Cryptozoic Man? Me…No wait…I don’t… In fact, I have never read anything worse in my entire life.  I am not going to waste your’s or my precious time reviewing this thing.  Its a pile of garbage wrapped in a rotten, bile soaked flap of ass skin.  This book tries too hard to be something different and clever and all it does is make you want to vomit. I don’t know what these guys were thinking when they did this book but all I can say is please make it STOP! -K

news_illustre_1385752941_157Black Science from Image happened to be my favorite book of the week and really a solid read compared to a lot of the books we read and review.  The artwork is top notch and the story kept going at a good pace to keep you interested in the outcome of the issue.  The book follows the adventure (or horror show) of a scientist who is trying to make his way across the landscape of a hostile planet to get back to his “ship” before the thing explodes, killing everyone in his team, including his children.  The planet is filled with toad like creatures and there seems to be no Kermit like amphibians in this place.  The dialogue is primarily in his head as he runs and races across the swap like world.  In a few cells the book draws you in to care what happens to him and his crew.  Creating empathy in a comic takes work and most fall way short of me caring about the characters.  Black Science turns that around and keeps me looking forward to #2.  Solid read and we would definitely recommend this book. -K

scooby-doo-team-up-2013-1-cover

Ok, so each week we try to review new books that arrive here in the store.  We try to pick books that are new, different and might get people to listen to the podcast.  This past week one of the titles happens to be, Scooby Doo Team Up #1.  So much for different or edgy huh?  But, I guess in todays day and age, the simple goodheartedness of Scooby-Doo is different.  I won’t spend a lot of time writing about the book itself.  What do you want me to say? Its Sccoby-Doo teaming up with the classic Batman and Robin to solve a mystery within 32 pages.  Its a fun read and if nothing else, its nostalgic.  It brings you back to a simpler time when Saturdays were meant for the consumption of animation not social media.  If you have kids and you want them to be exposed to some good clean fun, why not pick up a copy of Scooby-Doo Team up #1. Or if you are an adult who really just wants to take a little stroll down memory lane this will do it for you. -K

Harley-Quinn-0

Harley Quinn has become something of a mystery to me.  The cult of Harley Quinn seems to keep growing and to me, I have no idea why.  This is my opinion, so please be kind, but she is not very interesting. I asked around on why people liked her and the typical answer is “she’s crazy” Or, “She’s Awesome”.  Thats great guys, but lets try and dig a little deeper.  To me, I think the only reason people are even remotely interested in Harley Quinn is how she looks.  I think its sex appeal that draws people to Harley Quinn more than who she is as a character.  It might add to the mystique that she’s a villain, but I am still baffled.  As for Harley Quinn #0, the book itself is pretty interesting since it is set to the premise of 17 different DC artists taking a crack at drawing the Harley Quinn comic book.  It gives the reader a great sampling of art work from all these different artists and helps you see in a “reference guide” kind of way, who is who and what are their styles.  There is no particular story, just page after page of Harley Quinn cells drawn by these 17 artists, and her commenting on what she thinks of each one’s approach.  The book is fun and different whether you are into Harley Quinn or you think she’s a DC gimmick.

Afterlife with Archie #2Afterlife with Archie #2 picks right up where #1 leaves off.  Through the eyes of Veronica, she recounts the horrors that befell some of her Riverdale friends at the school dance when Jughead comes in and starts making a buffet out of his fellow students.  The Afterlife with Archie series is one of the best out there.  And please!  This is not your typical Archie book.  In fact, this isn’t even close to any Archie book EVER.  Afterlife takes on subjects that you would never see in squeaky clean Riverdale.  From sex, drugs and even hints at incest!  This is an Archie universe set in the present day with a Zombie apocalypse thrown in.  Think Walking Dead, but with characters you’ve known from the classic books.  The art is great and so is the writing.  Each issue seems to be getting better and better.  We hope that you do not judge this book based on its ancestors, this Riverdale group is nothing like their forefathers!  This is one of the best books you will read right now. Come on in and pick it up!
