An AMAZING new era for the X-Men starts here! Ever since his Nightcrawler’s death in X-MEN MESSIAH COMPLEX, the X-Men have been without their heart and soul. After learning that their friend may not be gone after all, it’s up to WOLVERINE, STORM, BEAST, ICEMAN, NORTHSTAR and FIRESTAR to find and bring back the fan favorite fuzzy blue elf! Super star artist ED MCGUINNESS (HULK) joins master X-Writer JASON AARON (WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, X-MEN: SCHISM) to bring you the most exciting comic on the stands!

In the 1980’s, Alan Moore describes a future of a dystopian society where the people have no voice and no choice but to obey the government’s rule. DC/Vertigo Essentials has reissued V For Vendetta #1 this month and I’m happy to reread and dive into this “futuristic” tale from the 1980’s of how society looks in the 1990’s after nuclear war. The artwork is particularly underwhelming for me due to brighter colors than I would have liked. If Moore and Lloyd had used darker tones and images, I believe it would have been a thousand times improved.

The story of “V for Vendetta” on the other hand is one of the most intriguing stories I have ever read due to its political nature. Don’t get me wrong, I am not one for boring political shows or novels, but the fact remains we all live in a governed society. A group of fascists take over England and outlaw many forms of music, art and culture. Much like the Nazis, The “Norsefire” group was not of the people. The Norsefire group had succeeded in destroying anyone who thought or acted differently. “V” was their own creation that came back to destroy those from his past and turn the government on its ear.

V himself is one of the most mysterious characters in all of comics. He hides his true identity and his body with a costume. The vaudevillian appearance he presents makes his character very mysterious. I feel when I read this book that the historical fiction aspect is one that we all have asked ourselves, “What if?”

What if the government had complete rule and force fed us the news according to them. The hid the truth and anyone who questions them is taken out one way or the other. It’s scary to think about this kind of government in a modern England. This book thrusts the reader into thinking about a society where they are a statistic. No individuality, no freedoms and no choices exist in this society. Overall if I must score this book I would give it a 9 out of 10 with the coloring being subpar. The story is on sale at our store for 1.00 as a Vertigo Essentials book. Celebrate the 5th of November in style and rediscover or discover V for Vendetta issue 1 for the first time.

J and I decided to take a look and review the following bookthis week for our podcast.

The first book we reviewed was Alex + Ada from Image, the story of boring old Alex who has a pretty mundane life in and amongst the ilife type atmosphere of the future he lives in. Virtual TV’s, robots and telephone implants round out the list of cool things at his daily disposal and yet he appears to be unfulfilled.  He is pining over a lost love and is down in the dumps on his birthday despite his friends throwing him a party.  The book ends with a big “hmmm I wonder whats next” but the question you will have to ask yourself, “do I care?”. The art is as mundane as the story and life that Alex leads, and perhaps there is a method to the artist’s madness.  Perhaps it is supposed to look lackluster with very little to no color or detail?  Each cell is a bit bland and I swear most of the art was just cut and paste from each cell leaving you to notice the subtle differences.  Its kind of a cool concept even if it was not executed very well.  We both recommend the book but be careful and don’t read it at work or you might just doze off.

This book scores a solid 6
